have found a new passion... well, more of an old one....

DRINKING

however i have a new taste

sweet sweet whiskey....

kind of all started after i went to "dram fest 09" which was a big big get together of different whiskeys at the town hall in Christchurch.

had a total of 280 different bottles open, and available for tasting over the three day event as well as other things happening like the cocktail competition.

basically it was a good starting point to learn a lot about the different whiskeys and different flavours etc.

finally found my favourite single molt of the day, BENRIACH 20 YEAR OLD

NZ $122.

so after getting paid last week (yes i got a job) i "Invested" in a bottle of Johnnie walker green label, which is basically a mix of 30 different whiskeys into a single bottle.

purchasing this has really just made things worse though....

so here is my wish list for the coming months.

there was also a photo of some "Adelphi selection" bottles of whiskey.

Adelphi is basically a company that buy the best casks over the year of brewing, then mature them till they see fit, then bottle and sell them.

The thing is, they only buy so many casks, so once they are gone, that's it....

so they tend to start at $200 per bottle, and go upwards of $1800

expense... but ohhh sooo good.....

im going to shut up and stop rambling on about whiskey....

heres the problem...

we allocate money for expenses. $25 each per week.

that covers 200 for electricity, 200 for internet phone etc.

now, were getting billed 330 for electricity, and 300 for internet...

i put up the 300 for internet.

200 was allocated.

The 100 i have put up and now have to bill.

180gb of internet were used, and some people use more net than others...

now the power bill is due next week.

last time we got a power bill, no one talked to me for the day, and i still have not gone in reuben's room.

how do you bill it when you cannot allocate it directly to each person.

now, the people who know they use more, do not want to pay more. they want to split it evenly.

problem is, no one wants to decide. i cant pay it this time. and im sick of getting the cold sholder for the next week.

ok, here is the issue as i see it.
we have 3 flatmates on a limited, relatively low income.
Then we have the 3 flatmates with the relatively high income.

for example, the low income flatmates have $600 per month to live on.
thats 150 per week.
less 100-120 for living costs (rent, basic expenses etc)
so that leaves 30

Now, the high income have 1000+ per month.
thats 250 per week
less 150-165 leaves 100-85

now, lets add in a bonus charge because flatmates used to much power this month....
thats an extra $15 each...

For low income flatmates, thats (=>)50% of their weeks income gone...
for high income flatmates, thats (=>)15%

now, lets say that the high income earners used 70% of the power...
so out of the 90 over, they were responsible for $63 worth of expenses.
thats $27 that the other 3 low income users were responsible for...

now, this is all fine, i get it, its money.
However i know for a fact that the 3 low income earners could not have used 50% of the extra power expense, as they simply do not have enough electrical devices...

my self for example:
these are the things that use power:

Macbook
Mp3 player
Bluetooth headphones
Shaver
Showers
Toaster
Playstation

now, the mp3 player, and bluetooth, both are charged by the macbook... i only shave once a week (yay for being young) and i only shower once a day at the most (normaly once every 2 days).

in the last week, the only thing i have used for cooking is the toaster...
the playstation is unpluged, as another flatmate has his pluged in.

the total cost of having the macbook running 24/7 for a year, is $50.
so i would hardly consider myself a big power user.
Not that i dont have my faults.

the couple only have a tv and laptop between them. their computer is never on, and they dont use their heater much as they are in a small room.

HERE IS THE PROBLEM

when the lower income earners protest paying the extra $15 each, siting that they have no consoles, they dont use the HEATED TOWEL RAIL THAT THE OTHER 2 INSIST ON.
so they protest.
i say i agree with their logic, and they go nuts at me!
telling me, your logic is flawed, their logic is flawed...

so now im getting the cold sholder from some of my flatmates.... who cant even understand it because they dont know what its like to be on low income....

i dont get it!
i dont have an issue with them, but they have an issue with me, so i have an issue with how they are responding....

Pessimistic workers

some of the people around me have a very pessimistic view of the world.
an example of this was New Zealand health care.

as some of you know i had my appendix removed last week.
the argument was about the quality of New Zealand health care...
however i believe it to be quiet good.
went to the clinic, and yes, i did have to wait for a long time in pain. However first saw a nurse who did some tests and asked for a statement about what was wrong.
when the doctor saw me, she asked again for the description of what had happened and then diagnosed me.
She then called the hospital for the chief surgeon and informed him i would be sent in immediately.
he then asked for some more questions for her to ask me etc.
when i did get in, i was put in a gown, and put on a bed, where i was seen by 4 nurses, then 3 doctors, then the anaesthetist, before being moved to a ward, and more doctors visited.
finally, about 8 hours after showing up at the clinic, the surgeons met me and started the surgery.
i was then kept overnight and had blood tests, blood pressure, oxygen levels etc taken every hour.
was then seen again by the doctors in the morning and discharged.

so over all i was taken care of in 24 hours, and told to rest for the next 4-5 days until the stitches healed.

Now, i consider that very good health care...
i could have just been given pain killers at the clinic and told to go home, and come back in 2 days if it still hurt.
however every step of the way, the professionals did there best.

in management, there is a term for employees.
the X theory:
Employees must be forced to work, and are only responsive to incentives.

the Y theory:
Employees enjoy work as a way to better them selves and do there best etc.

people around me seem to think everyone is theory X. that people only do the minimum, to get their pay and leave.
(keep in mind none of these people have ever worked a part time job)

so i ask, if you were employed, would you do your bear minimum? as you seem to think everyone else does?

before i asked, why go to uni?
well, iv come to a conclusion.
we dont go to uni to learn, to drink etc.
we go to compete.

uni is simply a competition tool for business and companys.
we compete with one another to show who is better.

however this is not all good.
the problem is, as we are not studying to learn, we are studying to do well in exams.
this is not the same thing, its not learning the material, its learning how to maximise marks in the exams.

this may sound kind of obvious, but its rather alarming.
Uni was always for greater learning.
now it is simply how to do well in exams...

(I have no idea if that makes sense to the rest of the world)

i would never tell a friend, they are being a dick for not being christian...
it is not my place, nor is it my concern.
there religious beliefs are there own, there own choice, and have no direct effect on me.
If they were to invite me to church, i would respect them, and take it upon myself to accept or deny.

A new academic year begins for those of us here in canterbury on monday...
a whole year of study, drama's, THE HUB, all nighters to finish homework etc.

a new start.

kind of worrying, last year went by so quick, only 2 or 3 years left with study...
then life changes.

no more lectures, no more teachers, just a boss and a pay slip.

i personally would prefer things to be just as they are right now forever, but we dont always get what we want now do we :)

hm, ok, so i was talking to an old friend about computers and breaking systems etc. and he sent me to a sight on a hack carried out on a macbook.
put simply, the guy took advantage of a usb wireless card pluged into a macbook,and used that as an access point to get complete control of the computer.

i no that sounds dull...
anyway... after reading about it and watching the video, i read through some of the comments.....

now, it was done on a macbook due to the fact that thats what they had, to show it works on most operating systems, not just windows, and also coz the whole "mac is so secure" bullshit that the im a pc, im a mac adds give off...

the thing is... i read the comments, and it was insain...
so many guy bitching about how great windows is, and how great mac is...
it was STUPID!
like blah blah... mac never has security issues...
blah blah ,more people using macs, more threat of security being broken as bigger insentive etc....
blah blah winblow sux.... blah blah

now i no michael doesnt like mac... and i no most windows users dont ( i didnt use to) but then you try it... and its not all that bad at all....

but no operating system is perfect, and no operating system is secure....
systems can always be broken...

so for god sakes people... stop fighting over it.... i swear, some of these mac addicts, who cant just take criticism and post a smart reply...makes me ashamed to be associated with you...

i have changed the plan once again... simply because i did not have the tools to do the earlier plan.

if you have ever been taught to paint in black and white, you will understand how much of a hell it is...

instead of infinite colours to describe the form and shapes of the model, you get 2... that and the fact that anything you mix with black becomes "Dirty" makes it a nightmare.
so for my third ever time painting in black and white i think its not to bad.

hahaha... ok... i think i may have gone overboard on my macbook...

not only is it running the mac operating system...
but also Linux....
and also windows xp...
and at one point windows Vista (although it wasnt worth installing)

and now... now its gotten a lil more crazy....

In LINUX... i can run mac programs.... i can also run windows xp.... and then i can also use windows xp programs (without loading xp)....

In MAC i can run windows programs.... i am installing windows onto it right now....

In windows.... well windows sucks to be honest.... so i can only really load linux programs... (slowly) and mac programs at a crawl...

add the fact that i can restart in any operating system i want... and well... yea.....
its just kinda crazy now....

last thing i need to do is install Parallels and i can instantly switch between operating systems, within operating systems.... im going to stop now before i lose myself.....

for all those people who have used my macbook and commented on how annoying having only one mouse button is- I HAVE FOUND THE ANSWER!

in trackpad settings, you can set it so that just by tapping on the track pad, u get a single click- making the button unnecessary....
AND, as the trackpad in the macbook can tell if ur using 1 or 2 fingers (u place 2 on and slide down to scroll down) there is also a setting so you can tap with both fingers to use Secoundary click...

A 2nd Mouse button without a button!!!

its funny, in the past if we did something bad, we apolagise, and try to make a mends.
however, as we grow up, the need for an apologie disapears.
as its not so much a slip up in our behaviour.

hm... this is probably better on my mac blog, as i get the feeling no-one will understand what im on about...
put simply, between drinking (which took up an alarming amount of time), iv been playing with my macbook, and now have 4 operating systems installed, as well as a data drive. allowing me to run almost anything...

ontop of that, i have worked out WEP and WPA netowork cracking...
(finding a password to a password protected wireless network)
as well as network poisoning...(intercepting data between the users computers and the networks, and then pretending to be the sites the user visits, intercepts information, eg passwords, usernames)

kinda scarry when u think about it... next time u go online and enter in ur user account name and password... just think about it....

but yes... finally worked how to get in to a network!!! (not that i plan to use it, but yea)
u work it out... then understand how amazing the technology is...
i mean.... i have no idea who comes up with this kinda stuff!!! its insain!!!

hm.... i dont know why im writing this post.
i dont know.
its like- after a wile, everything starts to shift into perspective... the only thing i can relate this to to give u any idea, was being punched in the face, so hard u just hit the ground and everything feels warm, like ur on a cloud...

well, i got a job.

ok... for those that know me, you know i addor my new blackbook...
its amazing

however, there are a few issues that must be looked at...

the whole dvd regions...
i never had this issue with my vaio, of whenever i put in a dvd it comes up and checks where its from... this is not good as most dvds i watch are copies.
i really hoping there is a program out there to stop this...

quad booting.
Now... i no its great i can run xp and mac ox... however, i want a little bit more...
actually i want double.
i want to be able to select on startup, my operating system, out of the following:

Mac Ox
Windows XP
windows Vista
Linux

however going about this is a big problem... as i want it all done with bootcamp to ensure that each operating system gets my babies full attention.

im assuming that i can partition the hard drive into 2 drives, then use boot camp on both of these drives to partition them again, although i have no idea if this would work.

i want the mac ox for uni, as it is the best for my batt time.
i want xp for gaming, as it uses less ram than vista and is more compatible than mac and linux.
i want vista for compatability, as lets face it, weather we like it or not its here, and it will be used alot more in the years to come.
and i want linux for networking and programing.

at minimum i want to know that i can have more than just 2 opperating systems on my mac.

Networking
i seem to be having a few issues with the wireless networking... although that could be router, or the windows pcs that im connecting to...
also moving large files takes forever.

the other problem seems to be with settings. for example the uni hub would not connect at one stage... although i managed to navigate my way around the many tick boxes until i got it working.
although then again, after creating network groups in windows i couldnt reconnect to the hub....

Temperature
iv been told that macbooks tend to get a little hot. I downloaded a widget called istatpro which gives you readings on everything you ever need to know.
the alarming thing was the temperature the cpu was reaching... sometimes up to 65 degrees c.
now i have know idea how hot that is comparied with other laptops... and hey-its got to be better than mojo's which squeels....
but still...
so i googled it and found there are actualy programs out there for this sort of thing.
now my fan starts at 3500rpm instead of the 1800 factory setting. especially when im on the bed.

Headphones Issues
now i like my music, and i like my games, however people around me im sure would not like the noise. therefore i use headphones. the problem is once i take the headphones out... the audio becomes very unstable at times....
apparently its called kernal panic. where the programing in th mac panics if the headphone jak is removed too slowly.
rather annoying

However
i would still have to say the mac book is amazing.
i can use the inbuilt mic to record my lectures with the help of programs off the net.
after a bit of getting use to, mac ox becomes really easy to use, even with one mouse button.
being able to run games is awsome, and they play prety dam well.
having a batt that i can get to last 7 hours is amazing!
(my vaio could only manage 40mins once i was done with it)
and the remote is awsome!
would have to say the mac books are worth their price.

BootCamp is best for games, as all the macbook specs are dedicated to the operating system that is running.

Parallel is the other option, allowing you to run an operating system, through an operating system... which is good for running windows applications in mac os etc...

for those that i have not ranted on and on to about my macbook.... these are the specs 4 it....
3 days pple! 3 days!

as you can see, the biggest let down is the graphics card, but apart from that it is amazing.
the thing is tho, its more about the spec. for that price, it is hard to find a laptop, that has a batt life of 6 hours out of the box, can run all opperating systems, has bluetooth, wifi, airport etc, and a small enough screen to use in lectures without killing your back.

it is amazing.
iv been converted.
i love my macbook

It seems that quite a few yuppie Mac users are upset that the typical Mac is changing so much. First it was the changing of the kernel from Mac proprietary to Unix based. Then it was the switch to Intel processors. Now its the ability to dual boot with Windows or any other PC based OS.

I guess all the hard core Mac users are losing their key points of argument as to why the Mac is better then a PC.

I use Unix, Windows and Mac. Truth be told they all have specific things they are really good for but none of them is perfect for every task. Sometimes you just need a PC for running development tools, Unix for web services, Mac for graphic design. Being able to duel boot a Mac with another OS is an awesome idea.

Its annoying to see all these Mac users whine so much. "How can apple do this to us? Haven't we been mindlessly obedient enough?"

Here's a clue. The ability to dual boot Mac hardware with multiple OS's is not for the typical Mac user. (No, Steve Jobs does not actually love you.) Believe it or not, its for Windows users. If we can dual boot on the same hardware and not have to buy a two separate systems, that saves consumers money. While at the same time putting money in Apple's pocket.
Its a good marketing strategy as well. True it was a gamble but it has definitely paid off. Apple needs to stay in business somehow and its ironic that Windows users will be the ones keeping them there.

Don't get me wrong though. I have nothing against Macs or people who use them as they sole OS. Some Mac users really are just ignorant though. Windows users are too but Mac users tend to stand out more.

eg-last week i had 250 owing on it.... so i payed it off, but didnt no the exact amout, and so paid 250.
