Social retardedness

(make sure everyone has an answer to my important question bellow)

now... mojo made a good point when talking about a home stay...

he said- shes staying in nz for another year, coz her english hasnt improved...
its funny- u move half way around the world- then hang out with the same groups of people u left?!

its stupid...

i duno... maybe im just realising how antisocial some people have become these days...

its kinda sad.
however- i give up helping those who dont want to be helped.

therefore, hopefully wont be bloging on this topic for a wile

well.. if you do take notice, unless they have been in new zealand since primary or high school, or grew up here (generally speaking), they tend to stick to their own circles (ie people from their own country). its really annoying.. i mean, hello.. why do you bother going overseas if all you are going to do is stick with people who come from the same country.

stupid, innit?

hence the need for idot 101

there are pubs in england which kiwis regularly frequent.. expat rugby teams in singapore.. expat suburbs and communities even.. there are Little Indias, Little Chinatowns, Little 'insert foreign city here' all over the world, its hardly an exclusive phenomenon.. yes, people always stick with their own kind.. its not just an asian thing...

and its not stupid.. its more to do with familiarity.. if vinny were to visit malaysia, he wouldnt eat kueh chap or try our kuih muih, he'll go to mackers and BK for a feed. Why? Cos those are familiar to him.. It's important to strike a balance between assimilation and absolutely chucking away your heritage.. it's rare for people to adjust into a foreign society (ie yours truly).. so spare a thought for those skinny mainlander chinks who speak funny english (and chinese.. and work at BK).. theyre so far from their homeland..

no, if i was going to malaysia, i would try those things, otherwise theres no point me going?! why go somewhere else to do the same thing?! that defeats the purpose of moving.

no, its just lack of trying and lack of confidence.

at our high skwl, we had guys like kenith and chaba, both chinese, but would not just asociate with the chinese groups... the only diference was that they TRIED to be social.

People stick to whats familiar to them, thats all that I'm saying, sure they'll try.. but at the end of the day, they'll revert to whats most familiar. Which explain your Irish Pubs expat communities etc etc..

irrelevant but totally just saw you walk down riccarton road...

familiarity - thats a point.
retardedness - thats also a point.

Both of you have a point. Heck, its the same point. Its like the whole half full and half empty glass theory.

Personally, I would like think its about striking a balance. Its good to be adventurous. Get out of your freaking box and take a whiff of what the outside has to offer. Then again, return to your roots when you need to.

People should give it a try before judging it and thinking its "not good" just because its something different to them.

No one said being adventurous was no good, it's just that people don't like to get out of their nice little box you see?

Honestly vinnie, if you were put in a school in malaysia with 2 other white kids and the rest are all malaysian, who would you talk to?? I mean these kids can't speak FLUENT english, the whole point why they're there you see?

So they start conversing with people who can actually talk their own freaking language and then they start hanging out and blam, you got a friendship which is WHY they hang out with their own kind. It's got a little bit to do with being adventurous and all that but in the end its all about FUCKING COMMUNICATION.

Why am I getting so worked up about this?

Random in the corner said...

it may be about communication to begin with... but what about after 4 years... if i stuck to the wite guys... i still wouldnt be able to speak mala... so thats just stupid

(and no, not the white guys- would find the hotist girl and go talk to her!)

being a little too harsh of a bitch there vinny eh?

Those homestays aint DUMB I don't think- it's perfectly natural

They lived in Korea for nearly all of their lives thus even if they do decide to hangout with 'foreigners' the feeling ain't as powerful as their nurtured way(which in this case is Korean culture); in the end they are bound to stick to their own kind

it's like when I was in Korea for the last 6 months

I went there and hungout, but couldn't stop missing fish and chips and the atmosphere of ChCh
In my case it's a little different, but what I can say from this is that even if you are dropped off into a completely different environment than the one you were used to growing up in, you would eventually feel nostalgic about home and find anything that has any relation to it

Koreans ain't dumb, they know that their kids will hangout with fellow Koreans when sent overseas

they still send their kids overseas because it still vastly improves their chance at learning english in a foreign environment, At a foreign environment

it's not social retardedness or any jack shit

they are paying to experience foreign culture even if it is at the end of the day explained by their fellow race

there are more elements to this affair that you must know before calling them socially retarded. End of story.

Think of it this way- in a way, it can be more effective to learn a foreign culture by associating with your own kind at that country because of 2 reasons;

1) They can better judge how they felt about the culture, and just about every little experience at that country because they are foreigners, and can judge without Bias (eg: defending own culture)

2) They can better explain to fellow overseas students in their own language how they felt about certain things and overseas students can better relate that to their to be experiences at that country

hot topic! but provocative.
I can see where you're coming from and where you are going with it, but honestly, the headwind is a little strong - fall back and regather your thinking patterns. because it seems like atm you're pushing the other thoughts away to prove that you are right.
Just an observation. Rethink this one?
